NN19 - QA 1: Admissions

Appropriate admissions process and patient screening are critical components of quality, ethical, evidence-based treatment. Through a panel setting, this session will discuss best practices on appropriate screening prior to admission and throughout treatment, provide guidance in understanding whether a facility is capable of meeting patient needs, and identify resources to effectively screen for co-occurring physical and behavioral health conditions.

Nick works for Cumberland Heights Foundation as Director of Clinical Research and Outcomes. Nick is tasked with management of all clinical outcome measurement procedures system-wide. He is also responsible for the development of all research initiatives focused on efficacious treatment protocol, predictive analytics, feedback informed treatment procedures, and collaborations with institutions of higher education. Nick has a Ph.D. in Couple, Marriage, and Family Therapy Graduate Program (MFT) from Texas Tech University. Nick has advanced training in quantitative methods, neuro-analysis, and systems theory. He also holds dual licensure as a Marriage and Family Therapist-Associate (LMFTA-TX) as well as a Chemical Dependency Counselor (LCDC-TX).

Ernest Bradshaw is the Director of Admissions for Caron Renaissance. Ernest joined the organization in 2002, bringing an extensive background in addiction, family systems, dual diagnosis, eating disorders, and adult programming. He has a deep knowledge of the needs of families and referents and uses a careful process of individual evaluation and family consultation to help relieve some of the anxiety and uncertainty individuals experience when considering admission for treatment. Ernest oversees a team of highly trained Admissions/Case Specialists. Ernest has been in the field of addiction treatment since 1992.

David Gomel is president of Rosecrance, Inc, which is a subsidiary of Rosecrance Health Network. He has 26 years in the behavioral health field with both clinical and administrative experience. Gomel holds a PhD in Public Policy and Administration, with an emphasis in non-profit administration; an MS in Health Service Administration, and a bachelor’s in Psychology. Gomel serves on a number of local, state, and national behavioral health committees, non-profit boards and trade organizations and is the current chair of the Illinois Association of Behavioral Health. Gomel is an active member of the Rockford community, volunteering with many charitable and athletic organizations.

Dr. Huhn is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Dr. Huhn’s research is focused on advancing the use of precision medicine in opioid use disorder (OUD) treatment, and his lab uses diverse methodological approaches to better understand the human experience of opioid use and OUD, including neuroimaging, ecological momentary assessments, survey research, and clinical trials. The long-term goal of this research is to produce results that have clinical impact, either by improving treatment outcomes directly or by evaluating and strategizing macro-level changes to improve healthcare for substance use and related disorders.
