Community engagement, public relations, and public policy are important areas of work for addiction treatment providers that enhance the field’s ability to treat individuals with substance use disorders. Public perceptions of addiction and treatment have shifted dramatically in recent decades, but unlike with other chronic health conditions, significant hurdles continue to restrict access to and provision of treatment services. This session will provide information and resources on developing effective public relations and public policy advocacy, with the lens of enhancing access to quality addiction treatment services.

Phil’s recent experience as Director of Operations at Recovery Is Happening in Rochester, MN offered Phil a front-row seat into the world of Recovery Community Organizations. Prior to that, Phil spent his career in management at Microsoft, Micron Electronics, and Taylor Corporation. Phil is an active member of the recovery community and has considerable experience in Substance Use Disorders, Recovery, and Re-entry.

Rodney has a 20-year history of senior management in the nonprofit sector, including in community primary health center administration, childcare services, workforce development, community counseling, adult education, community economic development, restorative justice, trauma-informed care, and violence prevention. His human services career began at TASC, where he served as a client advocate and case manager for court-involved adults in Cook County. Rodney earned his BA in political science from Chicago State University, his Master of Divinity from the Chicago Theological Seminary, and his Doctor of Ministry from Northern Seminary (Lisle, IL).
