APA 2024 - Achieving Health Equity in the Continuum of Care for POC: The Contributions of Lived Experience

APA 2024 is bringing together some of psychology’s leading minds to tackle some of the world’s biggest challenges. Explore keynotes from thought leaders, innovators, and change-makers—all on the APA 2024 Main Stage.

In the wake of the opioid crisis, health inequities related to substance use in minoritized communities have worsened. The symposia brings together national leaders: Felecia Pullen, CEO of Pillars Holistic Recovery Support, Anita Bradley, CEO of the Northern Ohio Recovery Association, Julia Ojeda, founder of Recovery Inspired Opportunities, and Annie Peters, Director of Research and Education at the National Association of Addiction Treatment Providers, to describe their cutting edge programming, research, training, and advocacy to minimize health inequities. Felecia Pullen, who is a two-time NYC Mayoral appointee to the Municipal Drug Strategy Council, will describe her Mixed-Method Recovery Capital Assessment Tool, Anita Bradley, who has been honored by the White House as a “Champion of Change” for programs she created within the substance abuse field, will describe her work on “Building Recovery into Diverse Globally Effective Systems” as a way of using advocacy as the critical link between treatment, recovery, and the outside world, Julia Ojeda, who was awarded the Commonwealth Equity in Governance Award in 2018, will describe her work as the leader of Peer Recovery Support Services and her leadership role in establishing Recovery Support Centers in Massachusetts, as a way of ensuring an equitable and people centered integrated approach to system-wide reform, and Annie Peters will describe the work of the NAATP Diversity, Equity, Inclusivity, and Belonging (DEIB) Advisory Council including the NAATP Stages of Change Model and assessment tool for DEIB Best Practices in Addiction Treatment. Each presenter has a wealth of experience and have advanced health equity in important and innovative ways. Their perspectives as individuals with lived experience enriched this work. Opportunity will be given to engage in discussion with presenters about how to apply these innovations in current treatment programs and research and ways to further engage researchers with clinicians and advocates.
