Ethics and Legal Considerations for Professional Counselors

This workshop for mental health practitioners will address ethical issues in professional counseling from an antiracist and applied participatory ethics model.

This training focuses on licensing board expectations and guidelines, boundary awareness, the dynamics of counseling confidentiality, informed consent, documentation standards, and explores important legal aspects in counseling, including malpractice and court participation considerations.

Content is specifically designed for the LPC standard and meets Oregon and Washington state LPC and LMFT licensure requirements for ethics training.

Workshop discussion topics and activities will include:

- Ethics in counseling: managing challenges, definitions, boundaries, and the evolution of perspectives
- Protecting your license from complaints: An OBLPCT update
- Antiracism and the applied participatory ethics model
- Practice using a formal ethical decision-making worksheet
- Confidentiality and informed consent
- Legal Issues: documentation, duty and malpractice considerations, going to court, “witness of fact” vs. “expert witness”

James Gurule, MA, LPC

James Gurule, MA, LPC, is a Licensed Professional Counselor with four decades of clinical experience in community mental health. In addition to working as a child and family therapist, James also provides clinical supervision with agency staff and is designated as Lead Risk Manager at Lifeworks NW. James also provides trainings through the Center for Community Engagement at Lewis & Clark Graduate School of Education and Counseling.
