Since Medicare was created to provide health insurance coverage for seniors in America, there have been substantial coverage gaps. One glaring example has been the lack of residential treatment benefits for substance use disorders. Filling this coverage gap has been a NAATP priority for several years, believing it is unconscionable to discriminate against this or any population.
NAATP joins our partners in the field who have worked to draft and introduce HR 9232, the “Residential Recovery for Seniors Act.” Special thanks to Legal Action Center and the American Society of Addiction Medicine for their leadership and collaboration. When passed, this will provide residential treatment coverage for millions of Americans who until now have been denied.
NAATP appreciates the co-sponsors of this bi-partisan legislation. They are Congresswoman Lauren Underwood, Ill, Congresswoman Carol Miller, WV, Congressman Paul Tonko, NY and Congressman David Valadao, CA. We are hopeful a companion bill will be introduced in the US Senate soon.
NAATP looks forward to the day when everyone in need of substance use disorder treatment has adequate access to quality care and HR 9232 is an important step in that direction.
