Turnbridge®, one of the nation’s leading mental and behavioral health treatment providers for adolescents and emerging adults, celebrates 20 years of exceptional care. Founded by CEO David Vieau in 2003, Turnbridge was envisioned to dramatically improve behavioral healthcare. Vieau’s drive to create Turnbridge grew from suffering the excruciating effects of protracted battles with substance use disorders and numerous failed treatment experiences. By the time Vieau achieved hard-won recovery, he was singularly focused on helping young people avoid the pain he had experienced by reinventing treatment that overcomes the pitfalls preventing it from succeeding.
The organization that would become Turnbridge grew from humble roots as a small start-up in downtown New Haven, Connecticut, doing things differently to help young adults find recovery, experience belonging, and return to academic and career pursuits. Today, Turnbridge is a Yale Teaching and Training Site and counts multiple Yale faculty among its ranks and is among the nation’s most sophisticated specialized behavioral healthcare systems offering residential, partial-hospitalization, intensive outpatient, and outpatient levels of care for adolescents, emerging adults, and their family members experiencing mental health or dual-diagnosis conditions. The organization employs over 350 highly skilled professionals, operates multiple state-of-the-art clinical centers, and offers dedicated primary residential mental health programs for boys and girls.
Hallmark Turnbridge innovations that would fuel its growth and reputation include non-arbitrary lengths of stay, phased programming that helps clients build skills and resilience through gradual exposure to real-world triggers, a strong emphasis on community-building and camaraderie, intensive case management and stewardship, exceptional treatment environments, extensive family education and support programming, and proprietary behavioral metrics that objectively measure clinical progress.
Turnbridge continues expanding treatment and access as the nation reels from record levels of mental illness, substance use disorder, overdose, and deaths of despair. The program has consistently added locations and specialized care services to help meet the need over the years. Last year, Turnbridge doubled its adolescent mental health treatment capacity by opening its girl’s adolescent residential treatment program on a private 110-acre parcel in Killingworth, Connecticut, which includes a world-class equestrian center. Turnbridge also makes its especially extensive treatment more available to families by becoming an in-network provider for leading insurances, including Blue Cross Blue Shield and Optum.
